My 'Frankenstein' piece

Mesquite

10" D x 14" high

I was hollowing this piece with filament tape wrapped all around it to hold it together.  The woodturning club was scheduled to come to my shop for a meeting that pm so I removed all the tape and buffed it up to show it off.  After the meeting, a new member came up and asked if my lathe was variable speed.  "Sure, watch this."  So saying, I turned it on and cranked the speed up.  The piece promptly exploded, throwing shards all over the shop.  I had forgotten, just for a few seconds, that I had removed the stabilizing tape.  So I gathered up the pieces and laced it back together.  It actually gathers more attention now than if it had not exploded!!  Turned in the late 1990s.
